National Dragon Boat - July 4 - 6

A showcase of unity.  Paddler and water.  Drummer and paddlers.  22 athletes in all, working in perfected precision as they charge down Welland’s Waterway as one! Plunging blades to the intense beating of the dragon boat drum, surging the boat forward toward the finish line.  There is an immeasurable passion encapsulated in each boat, a palpable dedication and spirit, each crew with a national title within their grasps. The best dragon boat crews of the nation will leave it all on the water this summer in Welland.

2014 National Dragon Boat Championships taking place July 4-6, 2014 is the highlight of the flatwater season with nearly 2,000 athletes from across Canada coming to Welland to compete in hopes of being named a National Champion.  Discover and partake in this ancient Chinese cultural tradition hosted right here on Welland’s Waterway.  While watching race action, you will also be able to wander about the Shoreline Festival; an exhibition of food, music and merchants.  Sip wine, enjoy the sights and sounds.  Catch the roar!!  We encourage all to come out and cheer on crews from coast to coast as they compete to capture the title of National Champion. These Championships will give revellers a hint of the excitement to come as the sport of Dragon Boat delivers the World again to the shores of the Welland International Flatwater Centre as athletes from around the globe come to  compete in the 2015 World Dragon Boat Racing Championships in August 2015. Come celebrate this amazing event with us; marvel at the fierce competition, absorb the tradition, and help us welcome the athletes to the waterway.

German senior men’s canoe polo team dedicates gold medal to fallen teammate

Sep 6th, 2018

Germany nearly won it all on the water after losing so much off of it. Only a 3-2 loss to Great Britain in the men's under-21 final prevented Germany from sweeping all four divisions at the 2018 International Canoe Federation Canoe Polo World Championships in Welland.

WHAT PEOPLE ARE SAYING

  • The 2013 Junior and U23 champs was the most wonderful experience for us in South Africa. Although our kayak community is relatively small, we are an intense group of loyal supporters. Following the build-up on your website as well as your Facebook and the photos on WIFC Facebook page was the highlight of my day. Not only mine but many of us shared links from early morning. Thanks for the effort and a huge congratulations on your achievement. The live streaming gave many of us goose bumps and the occasional lump in the throat. I checked many comments by parents all over the globe, don`t worry, we are all the same, from Japan, Canada, Africa. Thanks for sharing the wonderful experience. Today I could watch my son`s semi-final on Youtube, tonight we will watch it again and every day I will check Youtube for new uploads.
