In 1972, a new shipping channel for the Welland Canal was diverted east of the City a
nd the remaining waterway, the Welland Recreational Waterway, was born. Known affectionately as the Old Canal, this beautifully landscaped water park area runs through the heart of the City of Welland.

The Lieutenant Governor of Ontario, the Honourable Elizabeth Dowdeswell, will be in attendance in the afternoon of Saturday, August 22 , at the Welland International Flatwater Centre North Course for the 2015 World Dragon Boat Racing Championships. Her Honour will present gold medals to members of the winning team.
The best dragon boat crews from around the globe will leave it all on the water next week in Welland. This is the first time the 2015 World Dragon Boat Racing Championships are to be hosted in Canada and will be drawing from Australia, Canada, China, Chinese Taipei, Czech Republic, Germany, Great Britain, Hong Kong, Hungary, Italy, Japan, Macau, Puerto Rico, Sweden, Switzerland, Thailand, and the United States. Each day, this event will attract nearly 5,000 individuals to Niagara.
Welland will be host to the 2015 Pan American Club Crew Championships, August 14 – 16, at the Welland International Flatwater Centre. Join the excitement and be a part of the roaring crowd cheering on Canadian crews as they surged down Welland waters; August is the month of dragon boat in Welland.
