Canoe Niagara 2013

The Welland International Flatwater Centre (WIFC) North Course will be the host venue for the 2013 International Canoe Federation (ICF) Junior and Under 23 Canoe Sprint World Championships from August 1-4, 2013. Canoe Niagara will be the inaugural major competition to be hosted at the new WIFC venue and will set the standard for future large International competitions on the Welland Recreational Waterway and WIFC.

This event will welcome the World’s best Junior and Under 23 athletes to Welland, Ontario as they begin their journey on the road to the Rio 2016 Olympic Summer Games. Furthermore, Canoe Niagara 2013 will make history in the sport of Canoe Kayak by being the first World Championships to include an Under 23 category.

The organizing committee prepares to welcome over 1100 individuals from more than 70 different countries. This long list of attendees will include athletes, coaches, technical officials, international dignitaries, and various media outlets. We are excited to announce that admission to this international event is free of charge for all those interested in catching a glimpse of the numerous Olympic hopefuls that will be participating throughout the four days of competition. With over 70 races scheduled to take place on the North Course, Canoe Niagara 2013 is likely to be remembered as a historical moment for the Canoe Kayak community.

Shoreline Festival

Canoe Niagara is pleased to introduce the Shoreline Festival! The Shoreline Festival will take place on the banks of the Welland Recreational Waterway during the 2013 ICF Junior and Under 23 Canoe Sprint World Championships August 1-4, 2013.

The festival will feature food vendors, a beer and wine garden, live music, buskers, merchandisers, ethnic and cultural displays, local artisans, a paintable mural for children highlighting the disciplines of Canoe Niagara, face painters, and much more. This festival will be an ideal opportunity to showcase the unique heritage and multi-cultural background of Welland and the Niagara Region. Visitors to the World Championships will be highly entertained by the many attractions of the festival in its unique setting while also watching some of the best athletes in the World competing for glory.

As an extension of the daytime Shoreline Festival and Canoe Niagara, on August 2nd and 3 rd, a concert will take place at the scenic Merritt Park Amphitheatre in downtown Welland in conjunction with IlluminAqua. Renowned musicians will be performing in a beautiful setting that overlooks the waterway, the perfect ending to a spectacular day at Canoe Niagara.

We encourage all members of the community to come out and cheer on the Canadian athletes as they compete in one of Canada's most successful summer Olympic sports!

German senior men’s canoe polo team dedicates gold medal to fallen teammate

Sep 6th, 2018

Germany nearly won it all on the water after losing so much off of it. Only a 3-2 loss to Great Britain in the men's under-21 final prevented Germany from sweeping all four divisions at the 2018 International Canoe Federation Canoe Polo World Championships in Welland.

  • The 2013 Junior and U23 champs was the most wonderful experience for us in South Africa. Although our kayak community is relatively small, we are an intense group of loyal supporters. Following the build-up on your website as well as your Facebook and the photos on WIFC Facebook page was the highlight of my day. Not only mine but many of us shared links from early morning. Thanks for the effort and a huge congratulations on your achievement. The live streaming gave many of us goose bumps and the occasional lump in the throat. I checked many comments by parents all over the globe, don`t worry, we are all the same, from Japan, Canada, Africa. Thanks for sharing the wonderful experience. Today I could watch my son`s semi-final on Youtube, tonight we will watch it again and every day I will check Youtube for new uploads.
